In Andy Stanley's book "Choosing to Cheat" he discusses work-life balance in a way that is both challenging and enlightening. With the holiday season upon us, I thought I would share a few of my thoughts about the book.
At Mavidea, our current theme or rallying cry is "Breathing Room". We are working to prioritize our work around what makes the biggest impact on clients and creates extra room for adding more value to clients.
Choosing to Cheat
Andy's concept of "Choosing to Cheat" is a great intro to this concept. If you want to see a short presentation from him on this topic, click on the image below:
In the discussion for this message they ask following questions:
There may not be enough time to get everything done that you want to get done, that culture tells you needs to get done. You may have to cheat.
- But where are you going to cheat?
- Who are you going to cheat?
Limited Time
The heart of the matter is realizing that we cannot, in fact, get EVERYTHING done. Our time is limited, so we need to limit how we use our time.
This is a tough pill to swallow for most us in the business world. We have a desire to do more and more. To grow and grow. And we add more and more to our plates in order to realize this vision.
I think Andy's view allows for some clarity on this. Realizing we can't do everything is the first step in getting most of what we want. Only by choosing what we want most can we gain the clarity we need.
Bonus Point
One of the concepts that Andy shared in the book that really stuck with me was how he prayed about this topic. Realizing that there would be "cracks" that he couldn't fill, he would pray that God would fill those cracks. He would pray for God to step in and ensure the success of his day job while he made spending time with his young family a priority.
Merry Christmas and I wish you and your family some "Breathing Room" this Holiday Season.
