Spotlight on Pinterest

Pinterest Logo                                                                                                                                                                                According to a recent study, social networking site Pinterest drove more referral traffic to sites this past January than Google+, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and MySpace combined.  Not familiar with referral traffic?  Referral traffic is traffic that comes to your website through sources referring or linking to your site.  Besides social networking sites, referral traffic can come from such sources as blogs, forums, and social bookmarking sites.  Traffic coming from search engines does not apply.

For those not in the know, Pinterest is essentially a virtual bulletin board that allows users to share images/links they find interesting or inspiring.  Once shared, these images become “Pins” that can be placed on thematic “Boards” that users can customize for any topic.  Once something is pinned, it can then be “Repinned” by other users.  Pinterest was voted Best New Startup of 2011 by TechCrunch and one of the 50 Best Websites of 2011 by TIME magazine.  Read More »

Why should I upgrade my Microsoft Office software?

Upgrading software can seem expensive and redundant. Why would anyone want to pay money to download a program they already have, just because there are a few new features that they will probably never use? When it comes to Microsoft Office, however, there are some good reasons to upgrade.

First of all, Microsoft only offers compatibility and support for the two most recent versions of their software.  Thus, when Microsoft Office 2012 (the official name has not yet been given) comes out early this summer, Microsoft will discontinue support for Office 2007.  It would be wise for anyone who uses Microsoft Office frequently and uses version 2007 or older to upgrade when the new software is released. What’s Google+? Does it stand a chance?

Google+ is Google’s new social network that aims to topple social networking giant, Facebook, as well as other networking sites already crippled by Facebook’s popularity. Google execs claim that due to Google’s presence in nearly every area of the web, social networking with Google+ becomes simpler in that everything can be shared more easily. So, a G+ user’s Picasa album is now their “photos” page.  Their Google Docs, Videos and Calendar are all linked to the Google+ profile as well. Then, by using “Circles” within Google+, users can decide what information to share and who is able to see it.

Google+ does give users a way to make sure that the correct groups of people see only the posts, photos, etc. on the profile that they want others to see. However, many people are confused about how the “Circles” work and are still trying to figure out which Picasa albums and YouTube videos are visible to each circle of friends. Add in a natural capacity for human error and it is very likely that someone’s mother/son/boss is going to see that photo/video/status update from that one crazy party last summer. While this isn’t strictly a Google issue, it is more likely to happen as users keep track of more social networking accounts all at once. Read More »

Mavidea Loves Games

What does a love for games create for a company like Mavidea? A great excuse to set up a game tournament to benefit a charity that also loves games!

To back up, every year Mavidea staff chooses 2-3 charities that they want to participate with and contribute their time, energy, and money to. This year, one of the charities we voted for was Child’s Play. A few of the employees at Mavidea have donated to or participated in events for this charity before and thought that their cause lined up with the beliefs of many staff members at Mavidea.

Our next step was to come up with a way to raise awareness and money…we could have done the traditional breakfast or walk or donation sheets, but we wanted to make it special and something we could share with others in a unique way. What better way to share information about this great charity and raise some money than a gaming tournament??
