Creating a Successful Blog: How LinkedIn Can Help

Every year it becomes more difficult to break into the content game. Most websites now have blogs that are updated weekly with new tips and tricks for whatever industry they represent. As marketers, we understand the basics to a successful website: clean & modern design, customer testimonials, a personal touch, and content that is always being updated/changed especially through a blog. Although you’re doing everything “right” and spending hours writing your blog posts, essentially no one is reading them. It’s not because your content isn’t good or useful – it’s because the strategy of content is so saturated now and making your content count is HARD work.

You can find your way in by looking for new opportunities that everyone else hasn’t already beaten you to.

In walks LinkedIn…

Within the last year or so LinkedIn added a new feature to their social site – Posts. Now anyone can write a post (which is basically a blog post) and publish that post to their profile. They also have a feature called “Pulse” which is a compilation of these posts that people are reading/finding interesting.

What does LinkedIn’s newish Post feature have to do with your website/blog?

It’s a new way to get your content in front of decision makers and business owners. Your content is getting read and you can add links to your articles that go to your website’s blog, which then creates traffic to the rest of your blog/website.

1400 Views and 150 Likes

Here is a real life example: Mavidea’s CEO and Chief Culture Officer, Erik Barnlund, does a lot of blogging around business culture and organizational health – his goal is to share his experiences and lessons about creating a healthy business – hoping to help other business owners create a functional and well maintained leadership team and culture as well.

For a little less than a year, he has been posting a couple of his articles to LinkedIn per month…as he continued to post them he watched the readership of his articles gradually climb – his most recent post 6 Ways to Prevent a Meeting Meltdown has so far received over 1,400 views on LinkedIn and over 150 likes! That is great number of readers and generated great traffic for Mavidea’s blog! Erik had several links to his blog for other posts he’d written that related to what he was talking about, and it generated hundreds of views to those articles Mavidea’s website. More traffic is good for your SEO, good for your blog, and good for your business!

The moral of the story: always be looking out for a new way to reach your audience…it doesn’t happen often, but look for new social features or social sites that are allowing targeted advertising, or whatever the next big thing is and try it out! It might be the inch you need to take your website to the next level.
