When the Unexpected Strikes

How clarity keeps your business on course.

Sharing the focus keeps your business on track. Even when what you never thought would happen…happens.

Sometimes, even when you do all the right things, something happens. That’s the time when your future can depend on how quickly you can turn your team toward a new, urgent goal.

Pivoting off an established goal.

Our team had just gone through Patrick M. Lencioni’s Six Steps for building Organizational Clarity.

We came out of that session with a rallying cry that identified the most important thing we believed we could do for our business at that moment.

We were on board. We were excited!

And then…a key Mavidean on our IT services team turned in two weeks notice.  We could have stayed with the plan we had originally decided on. Instead, we charged into action to change our focus.

What was really cool was that within a five-minute meeting, we decided on a whole new focus for our team and rallied around a new the theme of Recruitment. Furthermore, we now had a new way to communicate this shift quickly and to everyone in the company.  More than ever before, we would be unified as a team and focused with laser-like precision.

We left the room energized with a new theme for the quarter: “Back to Full Steam”.

Turning a team on a dime.

Off came the hats we were wearing before, and on went the hats of recruiters. From CEO to front desk, everyone worked to contribute to that goal – all while staying centered on the job of keeping our customers smiling.

Each person turned their focus toward the recruitment goal, posting on Facebook and reaching out to networks. Networking was critical since we’ve found that some of our best matches have come from referrals.

On top of our usual daily tasks, we all turned into recruiters!

Short-circuiting the stress of change.

We knew the added responsibility meant extra stress. So we also focused on employee retention.

That meant making sure that everyone helped share the added responsibility, not just technicians involved. Here are some ways we’re supporting our staff:

  • We’re refocusing our marketing strategy. Our goal is to bring in the right kind of work at the right time so we get results that hit our clients’ “smile meter” – without overburdening the team.
  • We’re doing things to blow off steam. We’re planning some fun events where we can show that we don’t just work hard. We play hard too.
  • We’ll be taking turns doing something nice for the technicians on our team. It might be picking up lunch or getting them coffee. We all take a part in reducing their stress and letting them know we’re beside them in this process.
  • We’ll have a masseuse come for those staff members who are working really, really hard to create great results for our clients.

When clear thinking is a habit, clear direction is the result.

What’s super cool with this experience is that we were all on board with the new direction so quickly.

Because we already had a tool in place for working through the thought process, we were able to reprioritize and refocus on a new set of goals in record time.

But we would never have been able to accomplish this without first answering those Six Questions that helped us determine our organizational clarity.

Now, I’m certain we will welcome a fantastic new Mavidean to this team. But along the way, our entire team will share a fantastic sense of accomplishment and contribution to that goal.

We hope you join us in this discussion of Organizational Clarity. We’d love to hear the ways you’re building a Contagious Culture and clarity in your business. It’s all about putting your dreams at the center, and making the road to them fun and everyone involved.
