Finding Your Way around Google Analytics

Checking in regular to your Google Analytics account can offer you great insights into the effectiveness of your website. The effectiveness of a site can literally make or break some companies depending on what they offer and where most of their business is generated. Google’s data can seem overwhelming and confusing at first glance if you are not familiar with the site or don’t have much time to understand what the different data is telling you.

Well, you are not alone! Mavidea’s Internet Marketing team recommends these top three areas to track:

Traffic Sources Overview – this can be found in your left navigation. From this page, you can see total number of visitors to your site within a time frame and percentages of how your visitors found you (search engine, direct, or by a referring site). A great snapshot of your site’s performance and progress.

Unsure what the [Not Provided] is about? We talked all about it in THIS POST.

The bottom of this page gives you a snapshot of the top Keywords visitors are using to find your site.

Keywords – This is the second most important area to evaluate on Google Analytics. Keywords help you understand what words searchers are using to find your site. Refer to these keywords when adding content to your site, or if these words are not how you’d like searchers finding you, then re-word your website content to attract different visitors!

If you are using Google AdWords, this can also help you determine what Keywords to use to attract buyers to your services/products.

Audience Overview – The audience overview (also found in your left navigation) gives insight into your visitor traffic. For example, if your traffic source overview tells you that your site generated 1,000 visitors in one month, then your audience overview tells you a little about those visitors. You can see the percentage of new v. returning visitors, bounce rate (how many visitors leave your site immediately), average number of pages they visit, etc.

Managing your website traffic and success of your site can feel overwhelming – to start, keep track of those three areas on Google Analytics and you will be well on your way to a successful site!
