June IT Insights: Summer Is Here—And So Are Security Risks

As we roll into summer, many businesses are preparing for vacations, reduced staff schedules, and (hopefully) some much-needed downtime. But cyber threats don’t take vacations. In fact, this is one of the most vulnerable times for small and mid-sized businesses.

Here’s what we’re focusing on this month—and what you should be thinking about, too.

VPN Confusion: SSL vs. Global VPN

We’ve recently had a few clients ask about SonicWall VPN options. Here’s the quick summary:

  • Global VPN: The older, less secure method. It’s not MFA-compatible and more vulnerable to attack.
  • SSL VPN (via NetExtender): More secure, MFA-compatible, and our recommended option going forward.

If you’re still using Global VPN, it may be time to talk about transitioning to a safer connection method.

License Cleanup: Stop Paying for What You Don’t Use

Now’s a great time to audit your G Suite (Google Workspace) or Microsoft 365 licenses. If former employees still have active email or Drive access—and they no longer need it—you might be paying for licenses that can be removed.

Need help identifying unused licenses or setting up Google Drive archive access for past users? We’re happy to help.

New Device Setup: Things to Keep in Mind

Deploying new PCs soon? Remember:

  • Devices should run Windows Pro (not Home) if they need to join your domain.
  • Company laptops used at home should be added to our remote management system, especially if they access business data.
  • We can handle device prep, deployment, and support.

Quick Tip: Assign Static IPs to Critical Devices

If you’re moving to a new office or store location, don’t forget to plan for IP address changes. Emergency devices, printers, and other hardware often require static IPs—and forgetting this can delay setup.

We can help make the transition smooth, whether its coordinating on-site server moves or testing post-move configurations.
