How successful leaders tap their team’s best talents and energy when they need them most

  1. Be honest and transparent when facing a challenge. You don’t always have to have the right answer at the right time. Be vulnerable with your team and share the truth about the challenge. Your transparency and humility will garner their engagement and support. Everyone will want to pitch in and participate because they will feel safe in doing so.
  2. Remember that people enjoy helping other people. Sometimes as a leader, you just need help. The best way to have confidence in yourself as a leader is to recognize you have a great support system behind you. They will feel compelled and excited to help you get through whatever lies ahead.
  3. Recognize and celebrate great contributions from your team.  Why claim all of the great ideas being generated by your team as your own?  Give credit where credit is due.  Celebrate the team member that had the great idea you chose to implement.  Look them in the eye and say, “Thank you…that was an awesome idea…I really appreciate how much you care about our team’s success.”  People follow those they Know, Like and Trust.  If you make the success about your team and not yourself, they will always follow you.  Here’s a tip…count how many times you say, “I” instead of, “we” this week.  It should always be, “WE”!
  4. If you don’t have a support system in place, start building. Share your hopes, dreams and fears for a better future. Encourage your team members to share theirs. Remember that companies don’t conquer challenges. People do.
